Animal Shelter Appreciation Week: Arrowhead Animal Rescue

The first week of November is National Animal Shelter Appreciation Week, so we felt Arrowhead Animal Rescue (AAR) deserved a shout out and a little love.  We’re very appreciative of the work they do in Cook County, and even outside of the county in northern Minnesota and northern Wisconsin.

Jack, waiting for his forever home

Currently, the 6 cats under the care of the rescue are being fostered in 4 homes. The rescue has had dogs, bunnies, parakeets and guinea pigs as well. The rescue has a hard time accepting dogs into foster care at this time due to the special needs a foster dog has. They need more time to be evaluated for behavior issues and finding a good fit. To go into the current foster situations available, they would have to get along well with cats and other dogs. They also would be best placed where they would have a fenced in yard for exercise and enrichment. AAR is working on building/renovating a shelter located in the business park in Grand Marais at 204 Cedar Grove Lane, that would allow for taking in more dogs as well as other pets.

Shelter Progress

The pets AAR takes in or facilitates in re-homing are strays and owner surrenders as well as pets needing permanent or temporary care due to their owners’ physical or mental health status, incarceration or any other circumstances that leave a pet without an adequate home or care giver.

The number of pets adopted through AAR varies a great deal from around 40 in a year to just a few.  The Bond Between, in conjunction with Minnesota Spay Neuter Assistance program (MNSNAP), has held spay/neuter clinics in Cook County the last couple of years and has made an appreciable dent in the growth of stray populations, so the number of pets in care or available for adoption through the rescue has been comparatively low this year. AAR would like to highlight a special, highly adoptable kitty, Jack, who is waiting for the right forever home at this time. Jack is 4 years old neutered, up to date on vaccines, sweet and talkative.

Sweet Jack

The cost of adopting an animal through AAR is roughly $100 to $300, depending on the specific situation. A cat that is spayed/neutered is around $100. A pair of kittens are  $300 and they come with a spay/neuter voucher for $175 to offset the cost of spay/neuter.

AAR is funded solely by donations in the form of money, items, and volunteering your time and expertise. There is no paid staff.
